Site, Vista, Life, This and That

Just a few updates. Let’s start with Vista, I don’t like it anymore…at least not right now. I have removed Vista and reinstalled XP. Why? Where to start? The UAC was driving me NUTS. I found out how to disable it but every time I did after a reboot I got the message that my profile could not be loaded and that a temporary one would be used. And they took UAC too far. I tried to run task manager and I was told that it could not run because it required elevated privileges…but…wait for it…I WAS THE ADMINISTRATOR! To edit your host file, you have to go find the program you are going to use to edit it, right click on it and go into its properties and then tell it to run as administrator only then can you edit the host file. This is ridiculous in my opinion and I think all the hassles will turn off a lot of people. I tried to create a directory in my own user directory and it asked if I was sure, I then tried to rename it and it again asked if I was sure, I then wanted to move it somewhere else and once again I was asked if I was sure…RIDICULOUS! OK so now that that is out of my system…
I have recently purchased GnomeMonastery.net and GnomeMonastery.org to go with GnomeMonastery.com. I am also looking into creating a company. So expect some changes to the site…yeah I know I have said that before, but lets hope that this time I am right. :) The problem I am now facing, well more of a dilemma than a problem, is how do I separate personal from professional? My current thought is that the front page will be for my company and that there will be a link to my blog which would be on the about page that would talk about the owner, which would be me. The blog, what you are reading now, would then most likely be moved to blog.gnomemonastery.com. Any thoughts, or ideas on a better solution? Please let me know if you have any.
So yes you read the above part correctly, I am in the process of looking at what I need to do to start a company. I have a few concerns though as the company part is mainly to be ready in case I get a contract to do some custom software for someone. In the future I would like to develop my own software programs, for the Mac most likely, and sell them from the site, but that is a ways off and may never happen as I have a way of procrastinating. Anyway, I digressed a bit, back to the concerns I have. As a company that right now wont be making any money or in the future might make a little money but not much, what happens if I get laid off of my primary job? Can I still get unemployment? Are there any tax fees I am going to have to pay even though I may make no money for a while? Those are the two big ones that I am concerned about. Again if you have any input please let me know.
Lastly I want to wish all of my friends and family and visitors a Merry Christmas (or whatever else you may celebrate) and a Happy New Year. I hope that the next year will be good to all of you. And if you are traveling, be safe.
Ciao

cool on the starting up a business. i think doing the blog.gm.com is a great idea– i just went to this youtuber’s business site and he does the same exact thing for his blog. funny thing is, his site is a software development business too! so it’s all good i’m assuming!
as for starting it up/taxes/etc., ummm, not entirely sure what you are asking. if you mean do you still have to pay taxes when no income is coming in, then the answer is no. you’d just file as a hobby and say you didn’t make any money or are in the negative sphere of things i guess. but don’t ask me– i’m no accountant, that’s for sure!
and i do believe you could definitely still get unemployment– at least partial. i’m sure when yout get unemployment they ask are you anywhere else. the whole idea of UP is they try to accomodate your expenses from that which you were used to. if you were making 40k a year, but now are only thinking you’ll make like 20k starting out with a business (which is an extremely high estimate on ANY business b/c u don’t know if you will fail or not), they will compensate for that 20k you are missing. sure they won’t give you a full paycheck, but u get the idea. also, sis-in-law got UP when she was still getting paid at the nail salon, and she didn’t even know it was possible. so there ya go. just go to washington’s state gov site and look it up. it’s not as scary as it seems, really. if you can create software, you can definitely figure out how to file for UP. simple stuff.
p.s. when you have a sole proprietership, you should always file as a hobby anyway. *wink*
